In today’s society, many people are born with latent talents. Jazmine Sullivan, born to sing and a lover of jazz, is one of the most known female R&B singers. Jazmine has been compared to likes of Lauryn Hill and Mary J. Blige. At first, when Jazmine appreciated hip-hop in her early ages, she knew she wanted to sing. She started sing to in the children choir at her church. Becoming clear about her love for music and singing, Jazmine began looking for local places in Philadelphia to perform. As a primary songwriter on her album Fearless, Jazmine brings her own experiences and observations on life and love, with storytelling imagery to her songs. Her song “Lions and Tigers and Bears” depicts the meaning of her love as it involves many poetic devices.

Lions and Tigers and Bears, is about jasmine making a “conclusion” and says “just cause I love you and you love me, it doesn’t mean that were meant to be”. She talks about loving someone but just because she does, doesn’t mean that they have to be in a relationship. Cliché is used in the chorus “lions and tigers and bears oh my”. “Am I the only one” is alliteration, as well as “sorry if I sound so filled with gloom”. One of the most fervent questions asked in her song is “why do we love Love, when love seems to hate us”? The excerpt includes paradox, because usually when you love someone you expect them to love you back. Also, there is oxymoron. Love and hate is being used. Imagery is also used multiple times. “I can climb mountains, swim cross the seas”. “Fly cross the ocean, sing for the Queen”. She uses a lot of imagery mainly in the verses. Lastly, the song is filled with a lot of irony. “Just cause I love you and you love me, it doesn’t mean that were meant to be”. “But the most frightening thing is you and me!” “But trying is worst than to stumble and fall”. Jasmine expresses herself with many poetic devices.

In conclusion, Lions and Tigers and Bears by Jazmine Sullivan fit my theme and genre perfectly. She makes many good points and the song is told from her own point of view.

New Boyz, Dominic Thomas and Earl Benjamin. Also known as Legacy and Ben J are one of the most talented teens to make an appearance and be well known in 2009. Nothing to them but skinny jeans, a mic, and a whole lot of talent. A lot of attention has been focused on these boys, not just because of how they rap, but how they dress. Their style has influenced both boys and girls to dress with skinny jeans and high tops sneakers. Like soulja boi, the new boyz made a dance called “the reject”. This dance is preformed not only by them but by their fans as well. Although their style may be different, their songs are similar to Soulja boys songs. The main question being asked now is, will New Boyz replace Soulja boy as the new king of teen hip-hop, or are they just a rap version of Brokencyde? One of the songs that they recently performed at the North Attleboro Emerald Square mall is “Tie me down”. This song contains many poetic devices and is told from a unique point of view.

Symbolism, similes, imagery, repetition, alliteration, and cliché is all used in this song. A quotation from the song is “I’m pretty much away from this relationship I think we should wait for it, I mean later we can try things out but not right now”. This verse sticks out because it supports the title of the song. Now a days, theses are what most hip hop teens want to listen to. This quote depicts how he does not want a relationship at the moment. “No I’m not going to make a scene but you can’t tie me down like a pair of shoe strings”. The song uses different symbolisms and a simile to get the point across. More similes from the song is, “it’s the best and I love her but things don’t change when I’m not faithful you be feeling my pain now you stuck like a stain and I can’t believe that”. Alliteration is also used when it says “all the shirts, all the hats, all the clothes”. Imagery and cliché is found in one in this song “looking a hot mess”. Many poetic devices are found with in this song.

In conclusion, although many people don’t like the New Boyz because of their gratuitous lyrics, their lyrics do not always define them as a person. Their lyrics and songs send a humor vibe to their fans. Although there are some bad things about girls in their songs, New Boyz are just being candor and themselves, by telling others truthfully how it is.
